Information about Palau
Country
Palau
Palau, officially the Republic of Palau, is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, some 500 miles (800 km) east of the Philippines and 2,000 miles (3,200 km) south of Tokyo. Having emerged from United Nations trusteeship (administered by the United States) in 1994, it is one of the world's youngest and smallest sovereign states. In English, the name is sometimes spelled Belau in accordance with the native pronunciation. It was formerly also spelled Pe...lew.

Economy consists primarily of tourism, subsistence agriculture, and fishing. Tourist activity focuses on scuba diving and snorkeling in the islands' rich marine environment, including its barrier reefs walls and World War II wrecks the government is the major employer of the work force, relying heavily on financial assistance from the US.

Ngerulmud is located 20 km (12 mi) northeast of Koror on Babeldaob (Babelthaup) Island and 2 km northwest of the Melekeok village.
Biggest cities
Koror
Koror is the state comprising the main commercial center of the Republic of Palau. It consists of several islands, the most prominent being Koror Island (also Oreor Island). The state of Koror (population 14,000 as of 2004) contains about 70% of the population of the country. The nation's former capital and largest town, also called Koror is located here. The town has a population of 11,200. As of 7 October 2006, Melekeok replaced Koror as Palau's capital city.
Meyens
Meyens is the second most populous city in the tiny Pacific island nation of Palau, with a population of approximately 1,000. Meyuns is comparible in population to Palau's third largest city, Airai. It is located in the State of Koror, where the nation's largest city, also called Koror, is located. Other than Koror, Meyuns is the only sizable town in the state of Koror. Unlike the city of Koror, Meyuns is on Ngerekebesang Island, along with the towns of Ngerekebesang and Echang, although Meyuns is the only town that is incorporated on the island. It is linked by a causeway to Oreor Island, where the city of Koror is situated. Meyuns is the location of Belau National Hospital, the largest hospital in the country.
